While earning my undergraduate degree (from UNLV), I lived in Las Vegas for 3 years. There were positive aspects, but there were also less than stellar parts of living out there. Perhaps the most negative aspect was the feeling of loneliness that pervades the city. To combat the overwhelming nature of being stuck out there, I turned to driving and music. Vegas has, and always will have, some of the best driving weather EVER. The feeling of warm, dry wind rushing into your face as you travel out further and further into the desert (or into the burbs looking for the Trader Joes) is one of the most freeing experiences. It’s like flying, or what I imagine this, would feel like.
Back home, I would rollerblade for miles on end. Going along the path, listening to all my favorite music, that was my release. Vegas, however, is notorious for killing pedestrians. I had to find some other time and place to listen to my music. It was then I realized how perfect the combination of driving with your windows down, wind rushing at your face, and radio blasting really was. Now, years later, I still find great comfort in driving with no set destination or playlist.
Of the many albums I played, Born and Raised, Paradise Valley, Simple Times, Hozier, and Endless Highway were on repeat. When I finally settled on writing this blog, I knew that first and foremost, it must have some tie to music. I still greatly mourn the loss of thisismyjam.com
When I set out to name my blog, it took little time before I settled upon naming it after a song. One song in particular, Jackie and Wilson, stuck out. I remember how much that song meant to me. It was upbeat, singable, and sunny. It’s one of those songs, like this one, that just makes me want to dance. To raise my arms overhead, and bop around the room, the city, that place; to bring the sun with me.
I suppose this makes it the song of the week, every week.

I need to be youthfully felt, ’cause God I never felt young.”
